Definition: Harm Reduction
Harm Reduction is both a philosophy and a set of practices used when working with people who are using substances.132What is Harm Reduction?
Harm reduction means providing support that prioritises people’s human rights and the principles of social justice. It focuses on positive change and on working with people without judgement, coercion, discrimination, or requiring that people stop using drugs as a precondition of support.
This approach can be adapted when working with people who gamble harmfully. We want to meet people where they are on their journey and provide them with tools to safely decrease the harm gambling is causing in their life, educate them on the gambling industry and provide relevant support through tailored services.
